    She was born in Rushsylvania on Oct. 28, 1912, the daughter of the late Troyless J. and Carrie Sutherland Watkins.
    She was a loving wife, mother of six, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 29, whose greatest joy was spending time with her family.
    A 1931 graduate of Rushsylvania High School, she lived her entire married life in Zanesfield.
    She was a homemaker, who was an active member of the Zanesfield Methodist Church and its WSCS and choir. She was very active in the Zanesfield community, participating in the Zanesfield Minstrel and as a 4-H adviser.
    She and her husband wintered in St. Petersburg, Fla., in later years before settling back in the Groveport and Westerville areas near her son and daughters in 1998.
    The Shoots family developed the Valley Hi Ski Area, now Mad River Mountain.
    She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John W. Shoots, on April 25, 2000; a daughter, Carol Sue Shoots Miller; a grandson, Benjamin Cuyler Mallory; sisters, Florence Mayo Ramsey and Sarah Weiss Taylor; brothers, Howard Newton Watkins and John Sutherland Watkins; niece, Jane Watkins Thames; and nephew, Robert Watkins.
    She is survived by her children, Ralph (Barbara) Shoots of Westerville, Mary Anne Mahr of Columbus, Janet Leisure of New Port Ritchey, Fla., John D. (Josephine) Shoots of Las Vegas and Ruth (Charles) Mallory of Minster; grandchildren, David (Marty) Miller, Rhonda Shoots (Tom) Jones, Matthew (Jane) Miller, Sally Shoots (Dean) Johnson, Brian (Wendy) Miller, Nora Jane Shoots, Troy (Jennifer) Leasure, Joe (Amy) Shoots, Angela Leasure (Bill) South, Emily Mahr Conway, Carrie Mallory (Steve) Parada and Blake Mallory; stepgranddaughter, Allison Schlarman; 29 great-grandchildren; three nephews; and seven nieces.
    Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine. The Rev. Bonnie Frost conducts a funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Zanesfield United Methodist Church, Zanesfield, where calling is one hour prior. Burial is in the Zanesfield Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zanesfield United Methodist Church, 2880 Main St., Zanesfield 43360; and Central College Presbyterian Church, 975 S. Sunbury Road, Westerville 43081.1

  • ObituaryText: Carl P. Howe died suddenly Monday morning of a heart attack. Carl was born March 12, 1894 at Dodge Center and died January 3, 1944. He lived his entire life at Dodge Center where he attended the public school and graduated from high school in 1912. He then became associated with his father in the meat and grocery business where he remained until his death. On December 26, 1916 he was united in marriage to Lillian M. Gardner of West Concord who survives as does his father and step-mother Mr. and Mrs. Paul Howe, and five brothers, Manley of Faribault, Minnesota; Irvin of Rochester, Minnesota; Richard of Seattle, Washington; Robert of Sauk Center, Minnesota and Ray of New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother Ross. He leaves a host of friends and relatives who will mourn his passing. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 6th, at 2:00 pm at the Congregational church with burial at Riverside Cemetery.3
