When refreshments were served at the Open House held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Mrs. Marvin Nickel cut the anniversary cake, Mrs. Nora Karow and Mrs. Harry Karow poured coffee and Mrs. Ernest Albrecht had charge of the guest book. Nearly 200 friends and relatives attended the opne house from Jeffers, Springfield, Comfrey, Sleepy Eye and Sanborn. On Friday, Marsh 19, 1948, about four years after their retirement from the farm, making their home in Sanborn, Mr. and Mrs. Graff observed their folden wedding anniversary at the Sanborn Zion Lutheran church with a noon dinner, afternoon program and open house hours. Mr. and Mrs. Graff, both born in Minesota, were united in marriage at Windom, on March 19, 1898 with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wessell of Jeffers as attendants. They farmed near Sanborn until their retirement in 1944. in March 1958 at Sanborn, Redwood County, MN, USAG.4

  • ObituaryText: Mrs. Alvina Graff, 88, Sanborn, passed away Monday morning, October 6 at the Bethel Hospital, Mt. Lake. Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Zion Lutheran church at Sanborn. Rev. Robert Kant officiated. Songs were by the church choir, accompanied by Mr. Siegel at the organ. Pallbearers included Jerome Graff, Glen Graff, Dennis Graff, Allan Graff, Myron Mattison and Marlow Nickel. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Sanborn. Kluegel's Funeral Home conducted the arrangements. Alvina Quiram was born in Amboy township, rural Jeffers, October 7, 1880, to Mr. and Mrs. Steven Quiram. On March 19, 1898 she married Mr. Adolp Graff. She spent her life in the rural Jeffers area until 1943 when they retired and moved to Sanborn. Mr. Graff preceded his wife in death on anuary 23, 1964. Mrs. Graff has resided at the Eventide Nursing home at Mt. Lake since 1963. She was a life-time member of the Zion Lutheran church and a member of the Ladies Aid. She would have celebrated her 89th birthday Tuesday. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Esther Karow, Springfield; Romay Graff, Sanborn; Mrs. Emily Essig, Herman; Gilbert Graff, Jeffers; Willard Graff, Sleepy Eye; Mrs. Marvin (Effie) Nickel, Sanborn; and Alvin Graff, Sanborn. There are 27 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren who survive. Two brothers also survive: August Quiram, Minneapolis and Henry Quiram of Northfield. A sister, Mrs. Hattie Finnen of Minneapolis also survives. Mrs. Graff was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Nora Karow and Mrs. Ethel Albrecht; a young son, Paul; four brothers and one sister.1

  • ObituaryText: Cottonwood County lost another of its pioneer settlers last week when Stephen Quiram passed away at the home of his son, August in St. Paul. Mr. Quiram was for thirty years a farmer in Amboy township sixteen miles out of Windom. He was loved by his neighbors and friends for the fine character whichh was his. He leaves to mourn his departure eight children. His wife passed away twenty-seven years ago. Stephen Quiram was born in Prevensposen, Brumberg, Germany, Nov. 7th, 1849. He was also baptized and confirmed at this place. In 1871 he was united in marriage to Louisa Gust. In 1873 he immigrated to America and came to Potsdam, in Wabasha county, Minn. In 1875 he moved to Cottonwood county settling in Amboy township. To Mr. and Mrs. Quiram were born ten children of whom eight are living. His wife died the29th of August, 1906. In 1915 he moved to Mankato. Then in 1927 he moved, together with his son, August S. to St. Paul, where he lived until his death, which took place May 11th at 4 o'clock in the morning. He had reached the age of 83 years, 6 months and 23 days. Two children had preceded him in death, namely, Otto and Adolph. He leaves to mourn his departure nine children, namely, Emil, Albert, Henry, Paul, and Mrs. Adolf Graf, all of Amboy; Mrs. Charley Smedendorf of Lamberton, Hattie Besser of Burdette and Auust [sic] of St. Paul. He also leaves thirty-one grandchildren and thirteen greatgrandchildren. He was buried Saturday May 13th from the Windom Lutheran church.2

LaCanne Family Funeral service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements. Gilbert Lois Graff was born Sept.2, 1910 to Adolph and Alvina (Quiram) Graff on a farm in Amboy Township. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. Gilbert received his education in Country school district 45, Sanborn Paraochial School and Sanborn Public School. In 1935 Gilbert married Viola Simon at her parents farm near Lamberton. Gilbert and Viola lived near Jeffers where Gilbert farmed for many years. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers, Gilbert served as a board member for several years. He also served on the Jeffers chol board for 18 years and wa son the Cottonwood County Soil and Water Conservation committee for 22 years. As a young man, Gilbert enjoyed operating and maintaining a steam engine thrasher tractor. Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking, music, dancing and children. He was especially devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Roanne Graff, five sisters: nora Karow, Esther Karow, Emily Essig, Ethel Albrecht and Effie Nickel; and three brothers Romay Graff, Willard Graff and Paulie Graff. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Viola Graff of Jeffers; two daughters, Opal (Russell) Raven of San Jose, Calif; and Joyce (Helmut) Maile of Colorado Springs, Colo; a son, Dennis Graff of Eden Prairie; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a brother; Alvin Graff.1,2
