Greg Merrill served as organist. A memorial service and inturnment will be at Jerffers on July 30, 1995. Lydia was born on May 8, 1894 in Welcome to Albert and Carolyn Stahn. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Welcome. Lydia graduated from high school at Tracy in 1912 and taught school for a year. She was then employed as a clerk at the Fretzke and Gustafson Jewelry store at Tracy until her marriage. On December 15, 1935, Lydia and Earl Schwartz [sic] were married. They operated the Minneapolis Moline and Buick automobile dealership in Tracy until retirement. Lydia and Earl then moved to Alexandria. They enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and Texas until his death in 1968. In Alexandria Lydia became affiliated with the United Methodist Church where she remained active until the past year. Lydia died at the Bethany Home on March 9, 1995, two months before here 101st birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; three sisters; one brother; one niece; one nephew; and one step-son Kenneth Swartz. Lydia is survived by two nieces: Norine Steffen of Owatonna; Bernice Edwards of tracy; two nephews: Norman Imme of Willmar; Merlin Stahn of Trimont; great nephews; great nieces; two step children: Wanda Gulseth of Alexandria; Bethine Feld of Marshalltown, IA; and step grandchildren. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral home in Alexandria.2

She was a member of Red Rock United Methodist church where she taught Sunday School and served as an officer of the United Methodist women. She was also a member of the Germantown Extension club. Effie enjoyed quilting, baking, cooking, sewing, visiting with friends and neightbors, gardening, canning, especially meat, growing enough sweet corn for the neighborhood and her family.5

  • ObituaryText: Gary Lynn gode, 55, of Sanborn, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Sunset Hospice in Worthington, MN. Service will be held at Red Rock United Methodist church in rural Jeffers on Monday, December 20, at 10:30 am. Clergy were Pastor Theodora K. Hall and Pastor Clinton Firstbrook. Interment was at the Red Rock Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Sturm Funeral Home in Lamberton. Gary was born October 8, 1949 in Springfield, the son of Arnold and Mable (Nickel) Gode. He was the youngest of four children and lived his entire life on the family farm south of Sanborn. Gary was baptized and confirmed at the Red Rock EUB church. After graduating from Sanborn High school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served from 1968-1975. Gary married Jean Peterson, July 10, 1971. To this union, one daughter was born in 1972. Through the years Gary enjoyed playing golf, softball, fishing and playing cards. He also loved music; from playing the trumpet in the high school marching band to singing in the men's chorus and enjoyed just singing along to the radio. Most of all, Gary loved being outside working on his farm and raising cattle. He was a member of the Red Rock United Methodist Church and served as trustee and Sunday School treasurer. He was alos a member a former Commander of the Sanborn American Legion Post #286. He enjoyed spending time with Legion activities, especially marching in the Color Guard. In Nov. of 1978 Gary was diagnosed with Stage III Hodgkin's Disease. After a hard fight he went into remission in 1979. By God's grace, Gary was given an additional 26 years with his family. In March of 2004 Gardy was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma. He fought hard to make it to his 55th birthday and his birthday weekend was full of special times with family and friends. Gary continued his fight but after numerous hospital stays, he moved to the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington December 1. He died December 14, 2004, surrounded by family at the age of 55 years. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Jean Gode of Sanborn; daughter, Janath Gode of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Sharon and husband Maynard Beyer of Sanborn and Joan and husband Dallas Giese of Jeffers; a brother, Steve and wife Donna Gode of Sanborn; mother-in-law, Helen Peterson of Lamberton and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary is preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law Edward Peterson.1

  • ObituaryText: Cleo Mae (Noble) Howard of Costa Mesa / Fountain Valley, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA at the age of 89. She was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend and everyone whose life she touched will miss her dearly.

    Cleo was born in Jeffers, MN on February 17, 1920. After graduating from Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in 1940, she joined the Navy. She was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she (a Navy Ensign) met and married George “Smokey” Martin Howard in 1945. The next year Cleo and Smokey moved to California where she worked as a Registered Nurse and raised two children, William Eugene Howard and Linda Sue (Howard) Arnold. Eventually the family settled in Costa Mesa, where Cleo was an elementary school nurse.

    Cleo was a dedicated gardener with a real “green thumb”. She loved orchids and is well known for her orchid garden and her many other tropical plants. She was also a devoted Christian and long-time member of Mesa Verde Methodist Church in Costa Mesa.

    She is survived by two her two children, William Eugene Howard and Linda Sue (Howard) Arnold, a grandson - Kevin Joseph Arnold, a granddaughter - Sandi Lynn Arnold, great-granddaughter - Robin Elizabeth Singley, and sister - Nila Ann (Noble) Meyer, of Kansas, and more than 20 nieces and nephews.

    The Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Pacific View Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3500 Pacific View Dr., Corona Del Mar, CA. The viewing will begin at 9:00 am with Funeral Services at 9:30 am. In lieu of cut flowers, the family requests that those wishing to do so, bring a living plant that will later be used to create garden memorial for Cleo, or donations to your favorite charity.1
