    Fredericke Werner gravestone, Lamberton Cemetery.
  • ObituaryText: Mrs. Fred Werner died on Saturday.Apoplectic stroke caused death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. People remained awe-stricken, when the word was quietly passed around that Mrs. Fred Werner Sr., was no more, Saturday afternoon. The truth of the statement was almost beyond belief. There had been no indication of failing health or illness. The news came as a bolt of thunder out of clear heaven.
Shortly before dinner Mrs. Werner complained of a heart attack, as well as a severe headache, and lay down on the lounge to rest. After a little while she arose, and said she was going upstairs to go to bed, and indicated that the attack would soon pass, as it had on previous occasions. She was helped upstairs and retired. Just before dinner Mr Werner went up to see whether or not she wished to partake of the noonday meal, and as she appeared to sleep, he came down, and said to his daughter Martha that they would have mother rest, so ate their meal without her. After the meal he went up again and as she appeared to sleep, he did not disturb her. He became alarmed, however when, about one o'clock, she had not stirred, so went up and discovered that her spirit had left its mortal dwelling. The side of her face, on which she lay, was a deep blue, indicating the rupture of a blood vessel in her head. He notified Martha, and she in turn immediately summoned a physician, who pronounced that she had been dead for some little time. Relatives and children were immediately summoned and came to give what aid they could.
Two daughters in Tampa, Florida were notified and indicated they were coming, but the great shock so unnerved them, that they were unable to make the trip.
Fredericke Werner, nee Griese, was born in Germany, Jan. 6, 1856. She came to America with her parents in 1867, locating at Brandon Wis. There she was united in marriage to Fred Werner, March 23, 1876 and in 1880 they came to Minnesota, locating on a farm in Highwater township, where they lived until 1915, when they moved to Lamberton, where they have made their home since. Thirteen children were born to this union, of whom five preceeded the mother in death. Those living are George, Minnie and Otto Werner of Germantown township; F J Wener at Jeffers; Mrs. Geo Miles (Emma) and Eleanore Werner at Tampa, Fla. E.A. Werner of Wells, and Martha at home. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrws. Emilie Gode of Lamberton, and Mrs Fred Schmidt of Milwaukee, Wis Nineteen grandchildren also survive.
She was converted in her youth and united with the Evangelical church, in which organiztion she has served as Sunday school teacher, and as president of the Ladies' Aid Society. Funeral services were conducted from the home at one o'clock, and from the Evangelical church at two. The Ladies' Aid, of which organization she had been a long time member, sang a German song at the house. The services were conducted by Revs. Lippert and Adelmann. The floral tributes to her memory were many and beautiful. A men's chorus from Germantown congregation sang a song at the church and another at the cemetery. A mixed quartet sang two songs at the church, also. The church was far too small to hold all who came to pay her a last tribute. She was laid to rest in the Lamberton cemetery, to await the call of the resurrection day. All children, except the daughters from Florida where present for the funeral as were many relatives and friends from a distance and also locally. We extend to the sorrowing family our heartfelt sympathy.2

If they had the smoke house in the back of the house, the Indians would have come and taken the meat!. The beams are stil black in this section of the attic. The three windows in the cellar are funnel shaped to better fight the Indians if necessary. Doors are on both sides of the house directly opposite on another. There was a large fireplace in the middle of the room. A horse woud drag in a log in one door, the log would be rolled into the fireplace, and the horse would exit through the opposite door. There is also a mill on the farm.1
