  • ObituaryText: Ella Louise Quade Wiens, daughter of August and Pauline Quade was born in Jeffers, Minn. April 28, 1901. She passed away in the Viewcrest Health Center after a lingering illness Jan. 3, 2004. She was schooled in the Cottonwood Public Schools and completed a course in the College of Massage and Hydro-Therapy in Chicago, Ill. On Nov. 17, 1921, she married David D. Wiens at Pipestone, Minn. From this union, four children were born. They are Leotrice Wiens Lev, Green River Wyo., Allen D. Wiens, Duluth, Verdella Wiens Jacobson, Duluth, and Marvin Wiens, Lincoln, Neb. The children were raised by devout loving parents. Home was always a busy place with lots of company, family parties and social events. Both Ella and David did extensive traveling and going to conventions and attending all the relatives picnics, birthdays and reunions in southern Minn. Prior to Mr. Wiens death on Sept. 13, 1977, they retired to Florida and then Ariz. where they were active in the Minn. Clubs, Bible Study groups, and sang in the church choirs. Ella was a loving mother and grandmother. She was active in Girl Scouts, was President of Lowell PTA, took great pride in the Duluth Heights Community Club, worked in the schools' hot lunch program, taught Sunday School at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, belonged to the Hannah Circle, loved all the Bible Studies, and you could count on her wonderful breads and pastry for the bazaars. Always active in various clubs, she made Pennel Park Commons her home for many years. She is survived by her four children, 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren. She recently celebrated five generations before taken ill. You are now with the Lord you loved. Family and friends will miss you. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 in the Johnson-Crawford Funeral Chapel, 514 E. 3rd St. Services will be Thursday, Jan. 8, 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Rev. Charles Henneman, 410 N. Arlington. Burial will be at Sunrise Memorial Park.3

  • Birth: Jay Brown was born on 20 May 1887 at Coloma, Waushara County, WI, USA; Jay L. Brown of Wausau, formerly of Coloma, was suddenly taken ill with a heart attack on Feb. 5 and passed away the next morning at a Wausau Hospital. Jay Brown, oldest son of Americas and Isabell Brown, was born in the town of Coloma, Waushara County, on May 20, 1887. He attended Coloma rural schools and the Endeavor Academy and later studied a business course at Wausau Business College. He was married to the former Helena Garske on Sep. 2, 1914 and since that time they made their home in Wausau. Mr. Brown was with the National German American Bank of Wausau for ten years and a cashier for a life insurance company before becoming city clerk on Sept. 2, 1924. He was reappointed clerk continuously until his retirement in october 1958. Mr. Brown had many interests in life, as a charter member of the Wausau Curling Club and as a coin and stamp collector. As a lover of flowers, he specialized in growing Iris and Gladiolus. After his retirement he took up woodcarving and turned out models of windmills and other things which he used to decorate his gardens. He also owned a cottage on Crescent Lake and spent much of his time boating and fishing. Surviving are his wife, one son, Leslie J of Rothschild; one daugther, Mrs. Virginia Geiger of Appleton; a brother, Byron of Wausau; and a sister, Mrs. Sylvia Hurlbut of Coloma; and mother other relatives and friends. Services were held on Thursday, Feb. 8.1

    Services were Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers with Rev. Harvey Pedersen officiating.
    Special music was provided by Maria Carter, organist; and Roger Quade, vocalist.
    Casket bearers were Matthew Rand, Ryan Rand, Chad Dahlheimer, Timothy Swanson, Reid Miller and Michael Miller.
    Interment was at Jeffers Cemetery in rural Jeffers.
    LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements.
    Gloria Jeane Quade was born Sept. 10, 1929, to Walter and Vera Quade in her grandmother Sinnamon's home in Jeffers. The family lived near Jeffers until 1932 when the Great Depression forced the family to seek work in California and Washington.
    After returning to Jeffers, Gloria graduated from Jeffers High School in 1947.
    She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers. She also married Gordon Rand there in 1948.
    Gloria and Gordon lived in Jeffers, where Gloria worked as a secretary at Jeffers High School for 10 years.
    In 1957, Gloria and Gordon moved to Marshall and in 1979 they moved to Thief River Falls. They eventually retired in Jeffers.
    Gloria served on many committees at First Lutheran Church in Marshall and Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers. She also was a member of the American Legion and VFW Women's auxiliaries.
    Gloria was society editor, reporter and wrote her "Rambling Rand's" column for the Marshall Messenger-Independent and the Jeffers Review. She was involved in AARP and Toastmasters, was an instructor for the 55 Alive driving programs and a CPR instructor-trainer.
    Her favorite family activites included rocking her grandchildren, cooking, camping and holiday get-togethers. She also enjoyed playing bridge, fishing and sharing Bible time with her friends.
    She will be remembered for her faith, which laid a foundation for her children and grandchildren, and helping others.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; two daughters, Mary and Lori; and a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and James Miller.
    Survivors include her son, Barry Rand of Jeffers; a daughter, Denise (Duane) Dahlheimer of St. Cloud; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Phyllis (Wallace) Rand and Colleen (Wallace) Hedman.
