William Leighton

Leighton, for over fifty years a resident of Barnes township, passed away at his home one mile northwest of Sioux Rapids on Friday evening of last week after an illness extending over a period of several month. About two years ago he was injured in an auto accident while trucking stock to Sioux City and several complications had developed since that time and the end came peacefully last Friday evening after a severe illness of several weeks.

    Wm. Leighton was know thru out this section of the state as a prominent stockman and farmer. For many years he has been prominent in the social and political life of the community serving recently as township trustee and in this capacity was a most generous officer in extending aid to the poor of his district. There have been no unusual or exciting chapters in the life record of Wm. Leighton but his course has been marked by that steady progress which results fom close application to his work and the wise use of the opportunities which came to him.

    William Leighton was born Nov. 30, 1868 in Forfar, Scotland. He passed away at his home in Sioux Rapids Friday evening, Nov. 20, 1931 at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 20 days. He was the son of Charles Webster Leighton and Isabel Cuthbert of Scotland. When less than three years old Will came to the United States with his parents and settled at Bangor, Wis. Here the family lived for eight years when in 1889 they moved to Sioux Rapids, where he has lived ever since.
    He was united in marriage on Oct. 7th 1896 to Miss Alta Mosher of Messervey, Iowa. They went to housekeeping on his father's farm. In 1900 he purchased the farm they now occupy. Two children were born to this union: David Rae Leighton who lives on his father's farm and Margaret isabel Van Vickle of Sioux Rapids.
    Mr. Leighton was an honored member of the local chapter of the Masonic Order, of the eastern Star, the woodmen of the world and of the Congregational church. In 1921 he was elected manager of the newly organized Farmer's Shipping Association, which office he has held to the day of his death.

    He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his loving wife and two children, his aged mother, Mrs. Charles Leighton of Sioux Rapids, three sisters, Miss Mary Leighton, and Mrs. N A Lundvall of Sioux Rapids and mrs. N C Thayer of Chicago ILL. Mr. Leighton will also be missed by a host of relatives and friends.
    Funeral services were held Monday at the Congregational church. Rev. Alfred H. Bartter and the Masonic Odder having charge of the funeral services. Interment was made in the Lone Tree Cemetery.

For the past four years she has made her home with her niece, Mrs. Louis Centgraf in that city. Mrs. Cuthbert was the widow of Alexander Cuthbert, expert Scotch stone cutter, who came here with Contractor Greenleaf from Denver to build the Seneca county courthouse. He settled here and married Mrs. Cuthbert, who was formerly Miss Lena Watts. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. I.D. Preston, East Orange, N. J, Mrs. Edson Spitler, Berkely, Calif., a son, James Cuthbert, Columbus; sisters Mrs. Marie Newman and Mrs. Henry Htt, Toledo and 13 grandchildren. Sh was a sister of A.J. Watts, who died a year ago. funeral services will be held in the West Toledo Boyer mortuary Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery here.1
