  • Death*: He died in December 1963 at age 87; social security death index.4
  • Misc*: He was WILMA: Um, He was always so good to me.
RUTH: Oh, that’s nice. He really was. And I tell ya, I don’t think I ever knew a brother and sister that were closer than mother and Uncle Chris.
WILMA: He had such a good heart.
RUTH: You know, I don’t think she ever asked about anybody else but one day she was going around the house looking and she says “ Where’s Christian?” She says, “I know he’s here somewhere.” And he’d been dead for quite a while. They had so many nice times together when he’d come back here.
WILMA: Yeah, he was always so nice to me. And a, one time he come home he brought me a nice little bottle of perfume, you know. And he didn’t take anything to the boys or to Wilfrid. Wilfrid says “You know, I think dad thinks more of you than the rest of us.” I said “Well, he never had a daughter so maybe I’m the daughter he didn’t have, you know.”
RUTH: I think they were very disappointed. You know, they lost a number of children and I’m sure that his wife was very disappointed she didn’t have a daughter. She wanted to take Lillie. They had, my mother had three girls and thought she could spare one. You think you can carry it home?
WILMA: Because the way he talked he stayed home and run the farm for his mother. You know. I think he was past thirty before he got married, and then ah, I don’t know whether she lived with them or what after they were married, after he was married or what happened. The only thing is I know when Wilfrid and I first got married he worried all the way home from our honeymoon that maybe Grandpa was gonna have to live with us because he was by himself which was alright. But when we got home, he met us when we drove in the driveway. And he said, “I found a house for you.” He says, “In fact, I found two that you might like. He said, “ I don’t want you living with me.” He says, “That’s no way for a young couple to start out because that’s the way I started out.”
WILMA: I thought that was real cute. He always was so thoughtful anyway. You know how he felt about liquor. When I was pregnant with Richard I was sicker than a dog for three months. And he come there and he was so concerned he says, “Wilma, would you like to have me go down and buy you some beer?” He says, “I’ve heard that is real good to settle your stomach. “ I says “No, I don’t want any beer.” But he would have gone down and bought it. in 1991.2

  • ObituaryText: Funeral services for Glenard Pankonin were conducted Monday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. Aaron J. Link at 1:30 from the home and at 2:00 from the Germantown Evangelical United Brethern Church. Miss Romona Werner presided at the piano. The Red Rock Quartet, relatives of the departed, sang three beautiful numbers. AT the home they sang, "Kneel at the Cross," and at the church "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Dearer Than All". Rev. Willard Stocker of Luverne sang the comforting number, "God Understands". Beside the beautiful floral offerings, there were $160.00 in cash memorials. The members of the Quintet were: Erwin, Wilfred and Marvin Nickel, and Alvin and Reuben Essig. The remains were laid to rest in the family plot in Red Rock Cemetery and was carried to its resting place by Gerald Karow, Burnette Nickel, LuVerne Pankonin, Kenneth Senst, and Marvin and Walter Martius. After the Services a luncheon was served by the Ladies Auxiliary.
Glenard Gilbert Pankonin was born at the home farm near Sanborn in Germantown Township, August 27, 1926 and departed this life at 1:20 Friday afternoon, April 30, 1948, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. He was one of a family of two boy, a son of Arthur W. and Amanda Pankonin. His age was 21 years, eight months and three days. Being born to parents that were very consecrated to God he had every advantage of a Christian home where he was brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord. He received Christian baptism under the ministry of Rev. L. M. Adelman. He was converted at the age of 12 under the ministry of Rev G.G. Davis and united with Germantown Evangelical church on April 13, 1941, remaining a member until the end. Glenard grew to young manhood in the community and in 1944 he graduated from Sanborn High School. Before his 18th birthday he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was inducted into the service on October 26, 1944, taking his boot training at the Great Lakes training station. He was later stationed at Fort Pierce, Florida. He was assigned to duty on the U.S.S. Ira Jeffery, serving in Japan and other areas. He received his honorable discharge on June 5, 1946, having gained the rank of Quartermaster Third Class.
Glenard had enrolled in the University last fall to take additional training. His first attack of the disease that finally took his life was a ruptured blood vessel in the base of the skull. September 27 he was on his way home to spend the weekend and suffered the first attack when home but managed to drive his car the rest of the way. He seemed to rally and went back to his studies on Sunday but again became ill on the road and drove to University Hospital where he spent a number of weeks, later being transferred to St John's Hospital at Springfield and from there to his home. He seemed to be getting along well when in January he suffered another attack and again spent several weeks at St. Johns. He was brought home and seemed to be constantly gaining and was able tohelp out with part of the farm work. He was given every consideration by his parents and brother and permitted to rest as seemed best for full recovery. Friday morning Raymond went to inquire a how he had rested and received a cheery "Good morning" and assurance that he was fine. Sometime later his mother heard a slight sound and going to his room a bit later found he had apparently tried to rise and had been stricken with unconsciousness.l He was immediately taken to St. John's Hospital where he passed away at the hour stated without regaining consciousness. Glenard loved the church of his choice and attended whenever possible. He was also a regular member in the Young People's Sunday School Class and often entered constructively into the discussion and planning of the Youth Fellowship of which he was a member. In all of these places he will be greatly missed. He leaves to deeply mourn his passing, his parents and one brother.2
