He is listed in the Federal Census of 1860 as a resident of Ella Township, lake County, Illinois. Military records obtained from the General Services Administration National Archives reveal that he enlisted into the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Co. on August 9, 1862 at Avon. Ill. He was discharged from the Army at Camp Harker, Tennessee on June 10, 1865. some of his experiences during his enlistment are described in "The History of the 96th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry."
He married Margaretha Wiebusch in Long Grove, Lake County, Illinois on December 15, 1868. In 1881, Gustavus moved with his wife and 4 children to Iowa and settled on Section 25, Baker township, O'Brien county. He was a member of the Paulina Lutheran Church.
He made the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889, filing claim ona homestead along the Cimarron River, Ten miles Northeast of Kingfisher. He then returned to iowa for his wife and 4 children, Emma, Gus, Herman and Claud. On returning to Kingfisher County they built a two-story frame house on the homestead, later adding other buildings furing the years of pioneer farming. There were some opportunities for recreation in the early days, such as fishing and hunting along the Cimarron River. Catfish of 75 to 100 pounds were not unheard of, and plentiful ducks and quail helped supplement their food supply. Emma, the only daughter of Gus and margarethe, married Jacob Copeland and they farmed about eight miles northeast of Kingfisher. Herman married Elsie Maass and established a grocery store in Kingfisher which he operated for many years. Claud married Gertrude Jones, whose father Clark Jones was also a pioneer and homsteaded on a school quarter adjoining the Bollenbachs on the south. After the death of Gustavus, on March 27, 1903, Claud bought the Bollenbach homestead from his widowed mother and continued farming it until his death in 1946. He also had purchased other land during his lifetime so each of his children, Hazel, Glen, Clyde, Ray and Irvin was left a farm. Hazel, the only dauther and her husband Bill Wakeman, acquired the homestead and continued to farm it. The early pioneers had many hardships but they also had a very free and happy life. It is a little sad that we cannot entertain or satisfy ourselves with the simple pleasures they knew. in 1976.1
