Mr. John Koch, the father of Mr. Elijah Koch, proprietor of the Jefferson House, Seventh street, and a gentleman much esteemed by all who know him, died about 11 o'clock on Thursday night at the residence of his son, above named, after an illness of only four days, the cause of his death being hernia. He was in the seventy-fifth year of his age. He was a native of Maidencreek township but had resided in Reading for a quarter of a century or more. His marriage took place in this city, but his wife has been dead for a period of about thirty-three years. He learned the trade of a miller, and worked as such at Evansville and afterwards at Van Reed's mill and subsequently to his marriage at Merkel's mill, Moselem. He then took up farming and followed that occupation in or near Kutztown, in Oley township and in Reading (on the Deininger farm, where the Diocesan School of the Episcopal Church is now located), and on Moser's farm, near Bernhart's mill. He again came to this city about five years ago since, and resided for about two years with a daughter, near the Marion school house, on North ninth street, and afterwards, until his death, with his son as mentioned above. He was the father of eleven children, six sons and five daughters, all of whom survive him. Two of the sons, Reuben and John, have resided in Sonora county, Cal., for over a score of years. Another son, William, a contractor, resides at Frostburg MD. A third son, Jacob, is a farmer in Lancaster county. Another son is Mr. James Koch of the firm of Bernhart & Koch, in the feed and grain business, on North Eighth street, near Penn. The other children, not here named, all reside in this city. An only brother of the deceased, Mr. David Koch, whose age is about 70, is a resident of this city. The funeral of the deceased will be held at his son's residece, on Seventh street, on Tuesday afternoon next and the internment will be at Alsace cemetery.3
