He was born on Aug. 10, 1917 in Kenyon, the son of Samuel and Susan [sic] (Flaten) Skillestad. He served with the U. S. Army during world War II as staff sargent with the 125th AAA Gun Battalion. He married Margaret J. Wahlberg on May 24, 1946 in Minneapolis, and he was employed as an electrician in the Cannon Falls area for numerous years. Skillestad is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons, Bryan (Jeanne) of Cannon Falls, and Thomas of Clinton, NJ; daughter, Susan (Jeffrey) Hansen of Rochester; grandchildren Wendy Jo and Eric B. Skillestad, Melissa and Benjamin Hansen; brother Claremont of Bombay, MN; sisters Stella Aakre and Edith Hegvik, both of Kenyon and Eleanor Westerlund of LaCrosse, Wi. and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Stanley and sister Charlotte Johnson. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Lundberg Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Bakken officiating, and a tribute by Roger Otte. Interment took place on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home, Cannon Falls.4

    Mrs. Skillestad, 90, of Cannon Falls, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2007) at the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.
    Margaret Wahlberg was born July 23, 1917, in Cannon Falls. She attended school in Cannon Falls, then went to college and received her teaching certificate. She first taught at the top of Sogn Hill, and later taught at three different schools in the Cannon Falls area. On May 24, 1946, she married Cliff Skillestad, upon his return from World War II. The couple lived in the Twin Cities for several years, as well as Albert Lea; they returned to Cannon Falls in 1952. Mrs. Skillestad worked at the Cannon Falls Library and was a secretary for her husband's business, Skillestad Electric. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Survivors include two sons, Bryan (Jeanne) of Cannon Falls and Thomas of New York; a daughter, Susan (Jeffery) Hansen of Rochester; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Art Wahlberg of Brandon, S.D; and a sister, Carroll Palrud of Northfield, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband in January 1991, two sisters and two brothers.
    Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls, and an hour before the service Saturday at the church.
    Memorials are preferred.2

  • ObituaryText: Samuel E. Skillestad passed away on Sunday morning, February 18, 1962 at the Kenyon Sunset Home at the age of 84 years. Born in Goodhue County, Minnesota on March 22, 1877, he was the son of Elnar and Cecelia (Iverson) Skillestad. He was baptized at the Dale Lutheran church by the late Pastor B. H. Muus and was the first child to be baptized in the old Dale church. He grew to manhood in Wanamingo township and was engaged in farming his entire life. One June 12, 1901 he was united in marriage to Severina Flaten at Cyprus, Minn. by the Rev. Paul Winthers. To this union seven children were born. On May 1st, 1958 he entered the Kenyon Sunset Home, where he resided until his passing. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Peder (Stella) Aakre, and Mrs. Edwin (Edith) Hegvik, both of Kenyon, Mrs. Roy (Eleanor) Westerlund of La Crosse, Wis, and Mrs. Wlliam (Charlotte) Johnson of Pine City; two sons, Claremont of Kenyon, and Clifford of Cannon Falls; one sister, Mrs. Wlliam Atherton of Oak Park, Illinois, one brother, Albert Skillestad of Glendive, Montana; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Stanley, his parents, two brothers and one sister. His wife, who was also a resident at the Kenyon Sunset Home, died on Monday, February 26, 1962, a week and one day following the death of Mr. Skillestad. A family service was held at the Hanson Funeral Home in Kenyon on Tuesday evening, February 20th, at 7:30 p.m. with services at the Holden Lutheran church Wednesday, February 21st at 2:00 p.m. the Rev. A.J. Thorson officiating at both services. At the church srvice, Kenneth Flom rendered two vocal selections, "The Old Rugged Cross," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", accompanied by Mrs. A.J. Thorson, church organist. John Davidson, Thomas Skaar, Louis Grove, Elmer Kyllo, Rudolph Teigen and Arnold Hessedal served as pallbearers. Interment was in the Holden church cemetery.2

"Den Store Vide Flok" in the Norwegian language and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", accompanied by Mrs. A. J. Thorson, church organist.     August Wahlberg passed away at his home here Monday evening at the age of 73 years. While he had been in poor health for more than three years, he had been seriously ill for less than a week. Mr. Wahlberg was born in Vastergotland,Sweden, on December 6, 1870, an d in 1891, when 21 years of age, came to Cannon Falls which has since been his home. On February 27, 1899, he was married to Minnie Carlson who died in 1904. In 1909 he married Hattie Ring who survives him. Surviving are also seven children, three sons, Elmer of St. Paul and Merle and Arthur in the armed service; four daughters, Mrs. Irene Patten, St. Paul, Mrs. Gladys Peter, Cannon Falls, Margaret Wahlberg, St. Paul,and Mrs. Carroll Palrud, Cannon Falls; six grandchildren: two brothers, Charles of Cannon Falls and John of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Welch of McGregor, N. Dak., and Mrs. Caroline Naylor of Santa Barbara, Calif. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the home and at two-thirty at St. Ansgars Lutheran church of which he was a member.2

Mrs. Irene Patton, St. Paul; Mrs. Allen (Gladys) Peters, Mrs. Clif (Margaret) Skillestad; and Mrs. Oscar (Carroll) Palrud all of Cannon Falls; three sons, Elmer of St. Paul; Merle of Cannon Falls and Arthur of Minneapolis; 19 grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 2:00 pm at the Lundberg Mortuary. Rev. Dan Pearson will officiate and interment will be in the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lundberg Mortuary Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday until the time of the service.2

  • ObituaryText: Carroll Marie Wahlberg Palrud was born December 25, 1920, in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, to Gust and Hattie (Ring) Wahlberg. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church and graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1938. After her education she worked as a nurse assisting Dr. Vaaler - Cannon Falls' town doctor. She married Oscar Palrud on January 12, 1944, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran. Oscar was serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII and Carroll went with him wherever she could, returning to Cannon Falls prior to the birth of their daughter Mary Beth.

    In 1949, Carroll and Oscar began operating the Dairy Bar in Cannon Falls. In 1964, they sold the Dairy Bar and opened Little Oscar's Restaurant in Hampton. Being a "people person" Carroll was well known and comfortable running the restaurant along with Oscar and their children. They sold and retired in 1983, spending many years thereafter traveling together. Oscar passed away on March 24, 2007, after 63 years of marriage.

    Carroll was a near lifelong member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church. She loved music and from the time she was a teenager she sang in the church choir. She enjoyed reading, music, playing the piano, and cooking and preparing family and holiday meals - especially Scandinavian smorgasbord.

    Survivors include her children and their spouses: Mary Beth and John Bremer of Northfield, Lynn Palrud and David Canfield of Minnetonka, Bob and Judy Palrud of Ranchester, Wyoming, Dawn and Jack Coffey of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Jean and Shawn Page of Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren: Kelly (Rik), Andrew, Diana (Bill), Leif (Mary), Eric, Skip, Kirk, Christopher (Erin), Mary (David), Caroline, Anna, Grace, Joseph and Olaf; 5 great-grandchildren: Grace, Dane, Julia, Nicklas and Claire; 2 sisters-in-law: Ruth Orfield of Towson, Maryland, Alice Lehn of Bloomington; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters Irene Patton, Gladys Peter and Margaret Skillestad; and her brothers Elmer, Arthur and Merle Wahlberg.

    Carroll passed away with her family by her side on Friday evening, February 3, 2012, at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center, at the age of 91.

    Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Cathy Rodland.
