Fred Shandorf of the Methodist church officiating for the accident victims, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Essig. Rodney Essig sang, "How Great Thou Art" and "The Holy City". They are great nephew and niece. Pallbears were for Mr. Essig: Marvin Pankonin, Frank Crippen, Francis Flaig, Virgil Zimmerman, Gerald Moll, Martin Chlemann and for Amanda Essig they were nephews: Arland Essig, Waldon Blank, Willard Blank, Alvin Essig, Wildrid Nickel and Herbert Luck. They were laid to res in the Sanborn City cemetery where they had attended memorial services on Memorial day. Mr. & Mrs. Herman Essig had made the trip from California, arriving May 23, attending the graduation and reception of their third granddaugther, Christine on the 27th and a family gathering on the 29th. where his sisters, Mrs. Nordby and Mrs. Blank and brother Wesley and wife had made prior arrangements to have the week together. The morning of the tragic accident Mr. and Mrs. Herman Essig and Mrs. Elty Blank made arrangements to visit Amanda's cousins in Danube and Redwood Falls. While Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Essig had taken Mrs. Nordby to Windom where she had purchased a ticket on the bus to Minneapolis. It was here they received the news of the accident prior to her leaving. Herman Essig was born Sept. 5th 1895 in Germantown township to Mr. and Mrs. Christ Essig nee Emelie Luck. Amanda was born to Mr. and Mrs. August Blank, nee Bertha Burkhart May 25 1897 at Beaver Falls. They are survived by a son Glenard of Sanborn and a daughter (Adeline) mrs. Robert Wheeler of San Bernadino CA and eight grandchildren. Brothers and sisters surviving Herman are: Wesley of Oak Creek, Wis. Mrs. Elty Blank of Cedar; Mrs. Roseann Nordby of Minneapolis; Reuben and Edna Essig of Sanborn. Amanda is survived by one brother, Otto Blank of San Bernadino, Calif. They were preceeded in death by their parents; Herman by three sisters and two brothers; Amanda by two brothers and three sisters.4

  • ObituaryText: Mr. and Mrs (Amanda and Herman) Essig died as a result of an auto accident on May 31, 1966. The Essigs were driving their 1960 Chrysler sedan when they collided at an intersection. Both vehicles were demolished. They stopped upright in the northeast ditch of the intersection. Mrs. Amanda Essig was rushed to Redwood Falls Hospital but died enroute. Mr. Essig died at the scene. Mr. Essig's sister who was in the Essig car was in satisfactory condition.
    M& Mrs. Essig farmed in Germantown township for many years until they moved to San Bernadino CA in 1963. They returned to Minnesota to visit their son Glenard and his family as well as other relatives in Sanborn MN. Some of the family including Herman's group were driving to Danube MN to visit other relatives when the accident happened.
    The funeral services for the family Essig will be held at Sanborn Public School Auditorium at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Fred Shandorf, pastor of the Methodist Church. Internment will be in Sanborn City Cemetery.
    Surviving are son Glenard and daughter Mrs. robert (Adeline) Wheeler of San Bernadino, and eight grandchildren. Mrs. Essig is survived by a brother, Otto Blonk of San Bernadio.1

    Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Anderson-Schmidt Jeffers Funeral Chapel in Jeffers.

    He is survived by many nieces and nephews including the niece he raised, Chiquita Corbin and her husband Gary of Dover, Tenn., and their three children; and a sister-in-law Lillian Essig of Partyville, Wis.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and six sisters, Christian, Ada, Walter, Herman, Elty, Wesley, Hertha, Magdalene, Rose and Edna
    .

    He was born on Nov. 13, 1916, in Cottonwood County to Christian and Emile (Luck) Essig. He attended District No. 53 rural school. He graduated from high school from Jeffers Public schools in 1936. He graduated from a business course in 1938. He was a farmer who raised livestock. He was a lifetime member of the Red Rock Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent for 20 years, church treasurer for nine years, a Sunday School teacher and also a secretary of the Sunday School. He was a member of the board of directors of the Sanborn Elevator for 15 years and was secretary of that board for eight years.1

    Dodge Center- Mrs. Howe, a lifelong resident of Dodge County died Friday December 6, 1957 at her farm. She was 75 years old and had been in ill health about three years.

    The former Murn Ann Patterson was born December 2, 1882 near Claremont to John D. and Christina Patterson. She married Carl A. Howe on December 24, 1902. The couple has farmed in Dodge County most of their married life.

    Survivors are her husband, Carl; two daughters, Mrs. Frances (Revere) Dewar and Mrs. Genevieve Knudson of Dodge Center; and two sons, Lloyd of Stewartvile and George of Corinth, Miss; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret (Robert) Bringgold, Mrs. Liz(Albert)Stevenson of Owatonna, Mrs. Nellie (Wallace) Miller of Austin, Mrs. Jessie (Roy) Rogers, and Mrs. Agnes (Wilbur) Cunningham of Rochester, a brother, Norman Patterson of Tacoma, Wash, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

    Two brothers and a sister, a grandchild preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 at the Congregational Church in Dodge Center. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Dodge Center, Minnesota.1
